Questions About Counseling

What kind of people come to counseling?

We believe that just about everybody can benefit from Christ-centered, Biblical counseling. A few of the many possible benefits might be:
  • Identifying career values, aptitudes and interests.
  • Learning communication skills that enhance all relationships.
  • Applying Biblical principles to daily life challenges.
  • Strengthening bonds between members of families and step-families.
  • Recovering from blows like divorce or trauma.
  • Building and re-building healthy, fulfilling marriages.
  • Grieving losses and finding joy again.
  • Growing spiritually, emotionally and relationally.
  • Receiving caring support, practical wisdom, and valuable tools when going through suffering and trials of all kinds.

How do I schedule an appointment?

Call our office at 717-656-4834.

What can I expect when I call?

Our office staff will take your information and arrange for an initial appointment with the counselor best suited to your situation and schedule. Appointments are often available within a week's time. Once the initial appointment is set, our office staff will mail you our registration forms, which are to be completed and brought with you to your first appointment. Other options for completing these forms include downloading the Registration Forms from our website, or arriving 10 minutes early to your initial appointment.

What can I expect from my first appointment?

Your first appointment will be a typical 50-minute session. (Some clients who come to Upward Call from a distance prefer to schedule double-session appointments, and we are happy to grant that request as well.) During this time, your counselor will ask you about the issues that are bringing you to counseling and collect helpful background information.

Our goal during this session is to send you away with an understanding of what to expect from your counseling process and with some hope and encouragement for your future.

Can I choose my counselor?

Yes, you may request a specific counselor. Also, let us know if you have any preferences such as age or gender.

Do you take medical insurance?

For possible insurance use, call the 800 number on the back of your insurance card and ask if you have any coverage for Upward Call Counseling Services. If you have coverage, also ask what your co-pay will be, and let us know when you call in for an appointment.

How much will counseling cost?

The fee for our counseling services is $90.00 for a 50-minute session. It is our desire to minister to people, regardless of their ability to pay. Therefore, we offer services on a "sliding scale" through our Compassionate Care Fund. If you do not have insurance coverage for our services and are not able to afford the full fee, we encourage you to complete the Compassionate Care Fund (CCF) application, which can be downloaded from the Forms page on our website or can be mailed to you from our office. If you would like to have the application mailed to you, please contact our office at 717-656-4834.

Once you submit the completed CCF application to our office, along with proof of household income, we are happy to consider a reduced rate for services provided. The reduced rate will apply to services following the approval of the reduced rate. If you have questions or concerns regarding your fee, please feel free to discuss these with our office staff or with your counselor.

How can I help a friend or relative who needs counseling?

Most of our clients are referred by others who are interested in their well-being. You can recommend that they check out our website or call us for information at 717-656-4834. If you need brochures or other materials to hand out, please let us know.

What if I have a question or concern about my counseling?

Our office staff, as well as your counselor, want to give you the best service possible and will be happy to answer any questions you may have about Upward Call policies or the counseling process. If you should ever have a concern that you would like to voice with someone other than your counselor, please feel free to call our Director, Dr. Johnson, at 717-656-4834, Extension 2.
